Melting is the continuation of my Americana series, with an extra twist: things and characters are melting down. This happened after I had two bouts with cancer, and received high doses of radiation. I felt literally like melting with this treatment. Eventually, I decided to use this concept as a metaphor for failure: personal, political, and in general, failure as a society to sustain or maintain a balance. Politicians, public figures, and average people (Vietnam vets like Mike who appears repeatedly in my paintings), all “melt” under certain circumstances. Like ice cream left in the sun…
