Biography

José Joaquín Rodríguez del Paso

José Joaquín Rodríguez del Paso (Teziutlán, Puebla, Mexico, December 9, 1961 – San José, Costa Rica, October 29, 2016) was a Costa Rican plastic artist and art critic. He was one of the first artists to introduce contemporary art in Costa Rica.

His work, mostly paintings, is based on a conceptual discourse on the identity and perception of Latin America in different areas: the political and social relationship between the metropolitan centers of cultural emission and the periphery, their power links, its semiotics, and its hypocrisy.

In his different art periods, his work ranges from (i) nature, posed as a colonial remnant (Hotel América), (ii) the construction of local identity based on the notion of paradise (Flowers and later Abstractions), and (iii) the inquiry about the love/ hate relationship between the United States and what its physical proximity and axis of influence entail (Americana and Melting).

Del Paso relies on different techniques such as drawing, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, video, and installation to achieve his artistic vision. He also has a short work on set design and literary work, in addition to articles and essays on the art.
