Variations on a Theme (2014) is a remake of del Paso’s earlier work “Tiempos de Guerra” (1987). Del Paso was unable to get the original work in time for his exhibition “Supermoderno” at MADC, so he remade the drawings.
Tiempos de Guerra is a set of drawings about the Contras in Nicaragua and the relation of Costa Rica with said conflict. This work is considered by Vicky Pérez-Ratton, former MADC director and founder of TEOR/éTica, as the turning point for contemporary art in Costa Rica.
