Americana

2005 - 2009

Like planets attracted by the gravitational power of the sun, countries bordering or nearing the United States of America, come under its influence. This generates a love-hate relationship par excellence: we envy their lifestyle yet we condemn their invasions around the world.

We also mimic or copy some of their ways, mainly, their insatiable appetite for consumption. Thus, we live lives that are divided; one eye on them and one eye on our worlds. Americana is a term they have coined to refer to items, values, or customs of their culture: apple pie, cheerleaders, turkeys for Thanksgiving, convertibles, or baseball.

With Costa Rica becoming a prime destination for American tourists, I made a twist on this theme and made paintings that reflect their expectations, attitudes, and more when they come here.
