Retrato hablado (police sketch)

Over the past decade, beginning around the end of the 90’s. Costa Rica experienced a large wave of Nicaraguan migration. It is estimated officially that at least 600,00 nicaraguans left their country and came to Costa Rica looking for better economical conditions. The response by the indigenous population has been mixed, but the immigrants are looked upon great suspicion. Immigration, discrimination and false assumptions about identity inform this video. The Costa Rica-Nicaragua immigration phenomena is illustrated in this 3-minute video about a woman who describes to a police sketch artist the physical characteristics of a suspect. We are never informed about the nature of the crime and this is irrelevant: what counts is the prejudice present in peoples´ minds when it comes to assign guilt and assume responsibility. 2008.
